To celebrate National Coming Out Day and the return of Queersay we reached out to our community to see if they would share their stories with us. We received some lovely personal stories and now, with their permission, we are sharing them with you.

Here is Julian’s story for you!

My mom got a massive smile on her face.
My dad was fine, but asked me if I was sure a bunch of times. (11 to be exact lol)

I realised I was queer when I was 14.

I really wanted to tell my parents, and I knew they wouldn’t have a problem with it, but I thought our relationship would change so I waited a few years.

When I was finally ready to tell them, my dad, who is a soldier in the US army, got deployed for half a year. I didn’t want to tell my mom without telling my dad, so then I ended up having to wait EVEN LONGER to tell them.

Finally, when I was 17, and my dad returned from his deployment, I pulled them into the living room and told them. My mom got a massive smile on her face. My dad was fine, but asked me if I was sure a bunch of times. (11 to be exact lol) He asked me how I was sure, and I laughed and said “well the internet exists dad.” He didn’t really get that comment. I still find it funny to this day :)
